Let There Be Music -- Or Not... -- Day 5/252

Walk: No, art tour homework
Distance: Home yoga (with music)

Image result for doing yoga to music

The other day Ciwt played some of her yoga teaching music while she practiced - and was amazed. An hour of yoga went by without her even noticing.

Clearly she really responds to movement with music.  But it isn't for everyone.  Many of her fellow yoga teachers Never used music, called it 'a distraction,' 'white noise,' and worse.  So, clearly whether or not to play music is personal.  Maybe, like Ciwt,  you want to do it some days and let the sounds of nature and life be with you on other days.

Que Estas Leyendo?* -- Day 5/251

Walk: Presidio
Distance: 5.5 miles, small yoga

Luis Jimenez y Aranda (Spanish, 1845-1928), The Bibliophiles, 1879, oil on canvas

After hours at our modern museum, Ciwt really appreciates the artistry of gifted, hard-working realistic artists like Jimenez Y Aranda.  His meticulously rendered details are exquisite: the facial expressions, the body (and dog) language, the clothes, the architectural details and even the unkempt condition of the streets.  Ciwt truly feels like she's been taken back in time to witness a true slice of Spanish life.

Here is a detail which still does not do justice to Jimenez y Aranda's ability to bring his subjects right off the canvas into the viewer's present.  As much as she can be energized and stimulated by modern art, Ciwt never stops being captivated by truly great genre, history and portrait paintings and
etchings.  Image result for The Bibliophiles, 1879, by Luis Jimenez y Aranda

Still Standing --- Day 5/250

Walk: Marin Driving Day
Distance: .5 miles and Home Yoga

Ciwt had her carpets cleaned today so she needs to write standing up while they dry.  This put her in mind of writers known to do their work standing.

It's pretty common knowledge that Hemingway was one Image result for writers who wrote standing up

Then there's Churchill Related image

Kierkegaard, Dickens, Virginia Woolf, Nabokov, Carroll, Thomas Wolfe, and, these days,
Philip Roth Image result for writers who wrote standing up who stands at a lectern to write, paces while he thinks and claims to walk half a mile for every page he writes.

With company like this, maybe Ciwt should take up the practice even after her carpets dry.

Cheesin and..* --- Day 5/249

Walk: Presidio
Distance: 6.2 miles (sunny day!)

Image result for obama bob dylan quote

Ciwt's heart is gladdened (See CIWT 5/336) by Bob Dylan's apparent true-to-himself non-acceptance (so far), non-comment (so far) of the Nobel Prize for Literature.  It is possible that he will follow this up by also not appearing at the award ceremony.

Nobody captures Ciwt's thoughts better than President Barack Obama in 2010 after Dylan performed at the White House for the first time.  Asked by Rolling Stone's publisher Jann Wenner how it went, Obama is quoted as saying:   Here’s what I love about Dylan: He was exactly as you’d expect he would be. He wouldn’t come to the rehearsal; usually, all these guys are practicing before the set in the evening. He didn’t want to take a picture with me; usually all the talent is dying to take a picture with me and Michelle before the show, but he didn’t show up to that. He came in and played “The Times They Are A-Changin’.” A beautiful rendition. The guy is so steeped in this stuff that he can just come up with some new arrangement, and the song sounds completely different. Finishes the song, steps off the stage — I’m sitting right in the front row — comes up, shakes my hand, sort of tips his head, gives me just a little grin, and then leaves. And that was it — then he left. That was our only interaction with him. And I thought: That’s how you want Bob Dylan, right? You don’t want him to be all cheesin’ and grinnin’ with you. You want him to be a little skeptical about the whole enterprise. So that was a real treat.

President Obama took his praise even further in 2012 when he awarded Dylan the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the country's highest civilian honor.  Bob Dylan accepted Image result for bob dylan obama medal of freedom and came for the ceremony.

*10/28/16 Addendum:  Today Bob Dylan called the Secretary of the Swedish Academy telling her, "The news about the Nobel Prize left me speechless.  I appreciate the honour so much."  He also said he would 'absolutely' attend the award-giving banquet in Stockholm "if at all possible."

Ciwt labors to avoid talking about the upcoming you know what, but it gets harder as next Tuesday approaches.

Let's see, what else? Well,  Moonlight is like no movie Ciwt has ever seen Image for the news result.  And Ciwt has seen a lot of movies.  She basically sat with her jaw dropped from beginning to end, a stranger in an entirely new-to-her and absolutely real world.

We Try to Keep Our Sense of Humor --- Day 5/245

Walk: Hood
Distance: 3.5 miles

Image result for keeping our sense of humor in yoga

Today Ciwt's allergy tiredness must have put her in mind of one yoga class she was teaching a feww years ago.  In an attempt to put across the idea that you can do yoga for the rest of your life, she reached for a Gross Exaggeration and said something like "I've been doing this pose for, what?, 100 years."

Just as she was going to continue with her instruction, a young student toward the back of the room spoke up:  "100 years, really?"  She was looking at Ciwt in alarm and was visibly relieved when Ciwt assured her she wasn't actually 100.

Ciwt can't remembered if the student ever returned to class.  Anyway, Ciwt can still laugh at this memory (and was more limber than her young student).  Sense of humor is all.

Certainly a genius and seminal.  Absolutely Nothing against the man or the poetry of his songs, but former bookstore owner/operator, Ciwt, wonders about that prize for literature.  There are so many worthy authors all over the world.
