Frame Job --- Day 2/247

Walk:  JCCSF, Trader Joe's
Distance: 2 Miles, take yoga class and do Pilates training

My fine artist friend, K. Libbey Nash, has a talent which is very rare. She has a sense for framing. Most of the artists I worked with when 'in the business' were hopelessly lost about frames.  This isn't to put them down but rather to say that knowing how to frame/mount/display a piece is an art apart.

Knowing this about her as well as the tricky business of framing, I've asked her to be my framing consultant with the pieces I've acquired from her.  This is pushy on my part.  She's done her job already.  But, thankfully she has been willing to do this. Sometimes we send email photos back and forth of.  On my end, blank walls and measurements; on hers, her photos of frame and mat possibilities and lists of questions to consider.

But mostly it is sort of a scary matter of trust, luck, hope.  Always with the understanding on my end that, as hard as we tried, the piece might not work at all when it arrives 'in situ.' That's the chance I take; she's the one who really takes the chance of putting herself on the line.

So far when the pieces have arrived I am truly torn about which I prefer - the art or the way it is matted and framed.  Not really, always the art is first.  But the framing is so organically right for the piece it lifts it to an even higher level.

She's wearing her framing hat now for another of her art works I've acquired.  Breath is being held..

After 30+ years here in my condo, ciwt is checking out other places.  To what end?  Can't say. But somehow feels good to open up a bit, lose the myopia.  Wonder what will come of this.

Tennis Update --- Day 2/244

Walk: Mindful Body
Distance: 10 blocks and take 2 yoga classes

Update on my tennis viewing thoughts (2/238).  Billie Jean King was recently interviewed on NPR and asked her thoughts on the state of men's tennis.  Her thoughts were all complimentary about the level of the game (I agree!) but, interestingly, she thought the men's matches should be reduced to 2 out of 3 sets - and the women's increased to 3-5 (reversing the current and long-standing convention).

Her thought was it will save the men's bodies; they'll be able to compete longer and the public will be able to watch them longer.  The current game is so demanding on their physical bodies, it wears them out too early. (Apparently women's bodies with their padding or something are actually more suited for longer matches). Also in an extremely high percentage of the matches, the person who wins the first set wins the match.  Why put them through an additional 1-2 grueling games when they have a probable winner?

The interviewer commented "Yes, and really, two hours is quite enough entertainment."  Ie, others besides ciwt get a bit bored/antsy to do other things than watch after a while - especially since there is the awareness of the 1st set winner usually being the match winner.

Probably the changes won't/can't be executed, but I was interested that others were thinking about whether it is time to do something/make some adjustments.

Meanwhile, congratulations to Rafa Nadal for incredible play.  Can't remember Billie Jean's words but she said something about Nadal playing far beyond all possible expectations/belief this entire year.  (And this is Billie Jean King's assessment! She also says she believes Serena Williams will go down as the best female tennis player and even now, along with Gonzales and Sampras, has the best serve in the history of the game).

Public Service Announcement --- Day 2/241

Walk: CPMC, Mindful Body
Distance: 2 miles and teach yoga class

Remember when you were young and 'get your check ups' meant getting to the dentist once a year?  Good advice and now that we are more than A.A. Milnes' 6, still good advice.

Unlike many kids, I wasn't anxious about going for my annual dental check up.  But I admit to being you know, like terrified to walk in for some of the adult ones.  Case in point, today.  Another 'suspicious' spot which could signal melanoma of which, yes, I have a family history.

The good news is/was 'nothing cancerous,' leading to the essentially euphoric news that, Yay!  Another day of good health.  The gift of it all is very close at these moments.

There will be other things to check out.  Other days, weeks of anxiety (read terror). And the lesson is always that same old childhood advice:  Get your check ups.

Whatever....Day 2/240

Walk: JCCSF, Western Addition Library
Distance:  3+ miles, take private training, take yoga class

Will go to a book group discussion tonight re: The Round House by Louise Erdrich.  Didn't care for the book that much.  The local angle is that she and her late husband, Michael Dorris, actually owned the Town House (See Day 355 if you want to learn about it) at one point.  He committed suicide and I was so relieved to learn it wasn't in that house.

I'm already steeling myself for one woman in the group for whom the more trauma and drama the better.  She'll love the book because it revolves around a particularly horrific event and then she'll want to argue with everyone, everyone - even those who also liked the book.  Some people somehow don't feel right if they aren't interrupting, dismissing other people's thoughts out of hand, arguing and not really listening.  I think they think this is a good way to be.  Know people like this?

My challenge with her is that I too want to prevail.  It bothers me no end that she's so negative and dismissive of others, and a Huge part of me wants to do something about her behavior.  But then that sets in motion the whole Mark Twain thought about arguing with a fool (They'll take you down to their level and beat you by experience).  It also makes everyone else horribly uncomfortable.  Unless...I can come up with the perfect scenario.  I'm tantalized by this.

Well, off to the fights, oops, book group..
