Maybe Don't Put a Cap on It --- Day 3/51

Walk: Agesong, Mindful Body
Distance: 2 miles and take yoga class

Ciwt always enjoys her perch in the critique seat during the Oscars.  (Unfortunately) she sees fewer and fewer Cher/Demi/Bork-type outfits meant to shock and amuse.  This year, not a single one it seemed.

What she did notice were several formal gowns with cap sleeves.  To Ciwt, cap sleeves mostly belong on tee shirts, young children, day time blouses and dresses. To her eye, cap sleeves mix metaphors.  Sometimes they hit women at a non-flattering part of the arm or create a bulky, and/or horizontal line look at the top of the gown which breaks up the flow.  Or they bring vestiges of a sporty tee shirt. Even Cate Blanchett's mesh cap sleeves, probably intended to be invisible and becoming to her arms, were a bit of a problem. The right sleeve had a fray around the hem that caught the lights and drew Ciwt's eye to it and away from her loveliness.

But, overall, even the most persnickety critics must be having a difficult time snarking about Worst Dressed.  The stars were out and they looked good.

The envelopes are being licked --- Day 3/49

Walk: The Mindful Body, Laurel Village, Trader Joe's
Distance: 2.5 miles and take yoga class

Ellen DeGeneres

Well, tomorrow is Ciwt's big day.  The movies have been seen, the popcorn has been bought, and the festivities begin as early as 1:30 in the afternoon and could go on until 10 in the evening - or, 8.5 hours.  We're talking the Oscars of course.

People are asking:

-Will the TV audience for the 2014 Oscars be the oldest ever?
-Will Ellen DeGeneres be the Oscar comfort food producers are seeking?
-How good will the $1.8 Million 30-second ads be?
-Will there be gaffes that become water cooler moments?

Ciwt is asking:

-Will there be any truly terrible gowns?  Please.
-Amazingly beautiful ones?  Sure, fine.
-What will be her watching projects? (laundry? closets? cat grooming? Whatever they are, they can't take much concentration).
-Will one of her least favorite movies be Best Picture?

That would be 1. Gravity and 2. 12 Years a Slave.  About Gravity, loyal CIWT readers have read Ciwt's thoughts in 2/274 and 2/316.
12 Years a Slave comes with more guilt and ambivalence for Ciwt.  It is excellent, no question.  The dreadful and difficult - and true - story is told probably perfectly.  The acting is Superb starting with the lead, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and including the supporting actor and actress Michael Fassbender and Lupita Nyong'o.  So, that pretty much means the movie should get: Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor and Actress, Best Actor, Best Director and Best Movie.  Ciwt totally acknowledges and admires all these things, but still stumbles at wanting to supremely reward a movie that is so gut-wrenchingly traumatic and sadistically violent from beginning to end.  Even if true.  So, it's personal.

-How will Ciwt's picks fare?  (See Days 3/7 and 3/8 for her personal picks and stay tuned for CIWT Post- Oscar commentary).

Bouquets to Floral Designers --- Day 3/46

Walk: No.  But looked out the window at Rain!

Sometimes just placing a few Trader Joe's stems in a vase - in a way that soothes/doesn't jar Ciwt's mind - can take the better part of an hour.  And then as the week goes on, each time she walks past the vase, she notices a dead bud or browning leaf and the nattering begins.  She cannot imagine the creativity, work, worry, wrestling with control and multitude of other emotions that go into the floral arrangements at the Bouquets to Art show. .

After the honor of being selected, a huge undertaking must begin. There is the choosing of the artwork (which the designer may or may not get I'm guessing.  I imagine some designers may have to create for works that do not appeal to them at all). Then there are the preliminary studies, rounding up of tools and materials, selecting and obtaining the best possible flowers perhaps from around the world, building models (?), safely transporting the bouquets to the museum, keeping the flowers fresh and the arrangement alive and vibrant - for an entire week - in a museum atmosphere  - with crowds and temperatures good for art but not necessarily flowers.  In public with your name broadcast for all to see. And so much more. Yikes. Must be harrowing.

As well as beautiful and stimulating and thrilling to the throngs of viewers who attend one of San Francisco's most cherished art traditions. It's now in its 30th year at the Fine Arts Museums and opening in a few weeks.
