Some Parties Are More Fun Than Others --- Day 2/361

Walk: Mindful Body, etc.
Distance: 1.5 miles and teach yoga class

Somehow these pictures of Alex Trebek were featured on Ciwt's email home page today, and they put her in mind of a recent experience.  Ciwt was invited and went to a holiday party given and attended by people she used to spend time with - maybe 30 years ago.  As she was standing talking, sipping wine with some of these acquaintances, another one she used to see quite often and play tennis with came into the room.  I noted that she'd become sort of plumpish but certainly knew who she was.  Well, and here's the story....

On the way over to speak to the little group I was in I caught her beginning to put out her hand. Then she looked at me, reached her hand in my direction and said, very warmly and politely, "Hi, I'm..."  Before she could finish - and horrified - I quickly said "Oh, hi, ___, Ciwt, nice to see you...."

It's the first time - Ciwt knows of - this has happened.  In fact I've often been told my looks haven't changed (that) much over time.  But, now this..  So when I saw these pictures of Alex today I asked myself, if I hadn't seen him since the top high school picture, would I know the person in the bottom picture was him?

And, on behalf of Alex and Ciwt, I say "Oh, yes!  Most definitely, yes!!"

All Systems Go --- Day 2/360

Walk: No; Too much fun riding around in my car with a friend
Distance: Couple of blocks and small (but pretty demanding) home yoga practice

They are rarer these days, but Ciwt never outgrows a road trip with a good friend.  For Ciwt this requires a comfortable and fun to drive car and, most important, a great companion where the conversations are interesting and the decisions are easy.

Today was one of those trips.  Ciwt had a couple of places to check out and wanted her friend's input in case there was something she missed in the viewing.  The is how it went:

On the way to place one I interrupted our conversation to say:  The road to this place is beginning to get me down. My friend: Yeh, the trees are closing in; it looks dark.

Nearing the actual place: Ciwt:  Does this do anything for you?  Friend: Not a thing, but maybe if we get out and walk around .. Ciwt:  Me either; no need to stop.

Nearing second place.  Friend: This is where the scenery really gets to me.  Hills everywhere with tall trees; I feel penned in.  Ciwt:  I totally agree; should we head back?  Friend: Yes.

On the way back we started discussing a couple of places that weren't on the list.  Ciwt:  Want to check those out?  Friend: Sure.  We did and both thought these places were light, bright, energetic, much better.

Then we ate late lunch at a place we both like - and where we ordered the same meal.   Easy, comfortable, stimulating, fun.

Ooops, wrong pic.  Here we go:

That you, Banks? --- Day 2/359

Walk: Presidio Theater
Distance: 20 blocks

Ciwt has nearly completed her annual attempt to see all the probable movie award nominees.  Rare exceptions are James Franco in Spring Breakers (which she missed) and August: Osage County and Her (which do not call to her at all - no matter how well acted).

Went to see Disney's Saving Mr. Banks today and lost my brain in the process. (But, with apologies to CIWT readers, will attempt a comment anyway).  With Disney I always start out knowing I'm looking at a contrivance.  Always, even as a very young child, as children often do. But, inevitably, Disney wins and I'm laughing and crying on cue - even as I deeply suspect everything I'm seeing and know my emotions have been induced.  It is a weird experience.

There's a Walt Disney Museum here in the Presidio a few blocks away that gives me the same creepy feeling.  I've only been once as a guest, but, even as I was looking at real artifacts and pictures - 'real history' - and participating in the 'joy' of all the happy characters, the feeling of wool being pulled over my eyes was tactile.

So, is Saving Mr. Banks a good movie?  Entertaining of course, and very well acted. You'll laugh, you'll cry. But you will not be told the truth - which the movie supposedly does.

But, gosh,  you know, what me care?

Om, Is it Saturday? --- Day 2/358

Walk: AMC Van Ness (Anchorman 2)
Distance: 3.5 miles

So Ciwt had her first Saturday of not teaching yoga and opening students up, not helping people, not doing good for the world, etc.  What did she do instead you might ask?  Did she:
Sleep in (yes), Hang out with her cat ((yes), Surf the net (yes), Go to a dumb movie (yes), generally fritter away her day (yes)?

Does she feel guilty, useless, selfish for not at least helping other people.  Ie, does she regret her decision to give up teaching the Saturday class?  N - O

Nickel and Diming....Day 2/357

Walk: Round and round the hood, already enjoying Saturday yoga teaching retirement
Distance: 5 miles

Just got one of those unsolicited 'opportunities' (in this case for life insurance) that included sheets of  personalized CIWT address labels.  I guess the companies and charities that go to the expense of having these printed and sent must know that the 'nice' enclosures will guilt trip the receiver into either joining/giving (preferred) or using the labels on correspondence giving the organization free publicity.

Ciwt used to respond with the guilt they have in mind.  Usually not giving or joining or even using the labels.  But feeling guilty and intending to use the labels. Now she is so inured she can receive the solicitations with actual dimes and nickels attached, peel off the coin, toss it in her coin jar and throw the solicitation away.  Wonder if there are more and more of us doing this, and the charities will look for a more cost effective ploy.

Outfitting the Ladies -- Day 2/356

Walk: Garage
Distance: 3 blocks and nice home yoga practice

The rainy season is having a slow start (we don't say 'drought' around here) so it is giving some neighbors chances for early paint jobs.  Always interesting and fun to see how Victorian owners express themselves.

Walk: Presidio
Distance: 4 miles

A still and grateful place to begin 2014
